139: Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit with Drew Manning

On this episode of Build Your Network, Host Travis Chappell interviews Drew Manning, the New York Times Best Selling author of the book Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit which has also become a hit TV show, and he hosts a popular podcast.

  • About Drew Manning
    • He’s in the process of writing book #2 in early 2019.
    • He’s finishing building a house.
  • Walk us through why you did fit to fat to fit to your body?
    • He grew up his entire life in shape.
    • Being fit and in shape was very easy for him, he didn’t struggle with being overweight or food cravings.
    • When he trained people they would struggle to follow them and he didn’t understand why.
    • He googled if someone had gained weight on purpose before and no one had.
    • The process changed his perspective on how he trains his people.
    • He gained 76 lbs. In 6 months, he stopped exercising.
      • He couldn’t help as much around the house, he was sick a lot, his mood changed.
    • What was the most difficult part about being overweight?
      • Physically- he didn’t expect to hold his breath to clip his toenails.
        • Putting shoes on, chafing, etc.
      • Emotionally – he wanted to tell people what he was doing because he thought they were judging him.
    • How does confidence play into success in life in general?
      • There’s nothing sexier than confidence.
        • Even when he was fit before, he never thought he was good enough.
        • When he was fat, he freaked out in public.
      • People want someone who’s confident that can perform in their role.
        • You can’t keep telling people how attractive they are, they have to believe it themselves.
        • When he got back to fit, he realized that we are more than our bodies.
      • How did you get the weight off and how long did it take?
        • He documented the journey back to fit and he had a plan.
        • The first month he focused on nutrition.
          • He went from 5,000 calories of processed foot to 2,000 calories of whole food.
        • He brought exercise back in.
          • He only worked out 5 days a week for 30-40 minutes per day.
            • Mostly body weight exercises, a lot of core and stretching.
            • Some weeks he gained weight, sometimes he hit plateaus.
          • Was it difficult for you to give up processed foods and drinks?
            • He struggled with food addiction after only 6 months.
            • The first two weeks back to fit were intense.
            • He had withdrawal symptoms, headaches, etc.
            • His eyes were open to how wrong he was about transformation.
            • He doesn’t train clients 1-1 anymore.
            • In the training, he focuses more about mental and emotional changes.
          • Now that you’re back to fit, do you still crave anything bad?
            • There are still a few things – Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Samoa Girl Scout Cookies.
            • The cravings will probably always be there, you just have to know how to manage them.
          • Talk about how networking and leveraging brands allowed you to create the business you have today.
            • When his story went viral, a lot of it was luck but he did put in the work to get interviews.
            • When Yahoo.com picked it up TV shows started calling.
            • He got invited to a bunch of the talk shows and things snowballed.
            • He got to know the production team in L.A. and have met people in a lot of industries.
            • Networking has to be nonstop.
          • Do you believe that what you know or who you know is more important, and why?
            • Who you know, the knowledge can be obtained later on.
            • Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.
