On this episode of Build Your Network, Host Travis Chappell interviews Sam Taggart, VP of direct sales in the solar industry and has successfully managed millions of dollars of revenue per month.

    • Born in Park City Utah and raised in a family of salesman and entrepreneurs.
    • Started selling at age seven.
    • Started a door to door company at age 13 that grossed over $100,000 in sales during high school.
    • Watching change, transformation, collaboration and networking happen.
  • Talk to us about the beginning of your door-to-door background.
    • Going door to door came really naturally to him.
    • He started by diving for balls and putting out lemonade and chips and he got $100.
    • He started the Gutterman business in California and made over $100k in high school.
    • He left right after college to sold alarms and sold five in the first day.
    • How did you get recruited to sell alarms?
      • He called the owner of two companies and chose the one that made more money.
      • He moved to Dallas without knowing anyone – he sold alarms from 2008-2015.
      • He switched to Vivint in 2012 and had to double his production.
        • Every year he was in the top ten and he built big teams.
      • He decided to move to Utah and sell solar.
        • Solar gave him freedom and it was a fresh market.
        • Utah is the mecca for door to door and network marketing.
          • There’s power in getting out of your element.
        • Sales Psychology
          • Your job as a door to door salesman is to lower the wall
          • How do you lower the wall?
            • 1 – Break the pattern
              • Do something unexpected
            • 2 – You have to control the conversation by answering the right questions.
              • How do I get them thinking about what I want then to thin about?
              • Get past the smokescreen objections.
              • Ask – are you the homeowner, how long have you lived here, who do you know in the neighborhood?
                • This builds a bridge.
              • 3 – Find commonality
              • Solar and alarms are designed to be sold in the house.
            • How did you get in the house from the porch?
              • He slowly moved in as he showed them stuff about the door
            • What are some of the best ways to get people to speak at your event and who are those people?
              • Just signed Jordan Belfort to speak at next year’s Door to Door Con.
              • Brian Tracy will speak at the virtual event.
              • Speakers include Dan Clark, Jeremy Androus, former VP of Solar City, VP of Monotronics and AT&T directors.
              • He has to turn people down for speaking at the conference.
            • What was the most surprising thing about throwing an event?
              • That it went so well.
              • Vivint hired Grant Cardone to speak at the same time, down the hall from his event.
                • He had to figure out how to adapt and he was nervous.
                • He decided not to say anything because he knew his event would be great.
                • About half of his people ended up going to the Grant Cardone event.
                • The door-to-door community came together at that time and Vivint learned a lesson that day.
